Communication

  • Be a listener. Effective communication starts with good listening skills, and when it comes to good listening skills.
  • Be positive. Raise your hand if you ever felt encouraged after communicating with a negative person.
  • Be an echo. You can be an even better listener by practicing a communication skill called “active listening.” Active listening is when you occasionally repeat, or echo, key phrases said by the other party.
  • Be a mirror.  Basically, this is a way to connect with people by mirroring some of what they do. Most people do this naturally without realizing it, but the best communicators tap into this strategy to facilitate more effective communication.

Be real.  More than anything, be you. Not the performer you. Not the pretend you. Not even the plastic you. The personal you will do just fine.

Keep an updated calendar:  This can be on your phone, your computer, or the old fashion hanging month-to-month calendar. A calendar will allow you to keep important deadlines or dates at the top of your mind. It’s up to you how detailed you want that calendar to be, but it’s important to highlight those important deadlines to keep yourself on track!

Hold yourself accountable:  This can often be the hardest part. If you happen to miss a deadline, don’t blow it off…get it done as soon as possible and apologize for being tardy. Part of being organized is being responsible enough to respond on time and if not, hold yourself accountable to a revised deadline that makes more sense and communicate that with your team.

Be responsive to team members: If you work in an environment that many different people could be relying on your particular deadlines. Communicate effectively with all team members affected by delays on a project or deadline that may affect their workload. They will appreciate it and most likely return the favor if the situation is reversed in the future.

Share progress reports: This not only will keep you organized with your To Do’s but also keep the rest of the company in the loop on what they should expect in the coming week, month, or quarter. Communication! Communication! Communication! Organization relies heavily on the ability to communicate effectively. It’s better to share too much information than not enough!
